Surface Finishing for CNC Milling

As Machined

The fastest finishing option. Parts are delivered with visible tool marks and may have sharp edges or burrs, which can be removed upon request. The surface typically corresponds to a 125 µin Ra finish.

Anodizing

An electrochemical coating that improves corrosion resistance and appearance.

Type II: Available in clear, black, red, gold, and more.

Type III: Thicker and harder for added wear and corrosion protection.

Bead Blasting

Abrasive media is propelled at high pressure to create a uniform matte texture. Ideal for cosmetic parts where a smooth, non-reflective appearance is desired.

Sand Blasting

Similar to bead blasting but uses sand-based abrasive material. Produces a matte, textured finish suitable for smoothing surfaces or removing imperfections.

Plating

A thin metal layer is applied to the part to improve durability, conductivity, and appearance. Creates a smooth and glossy finish while protecting against corrosion.

Painting

A coating of liquid or powdered paint is applied to achieve a smooth, glossy, or clear finish. This method can enhance appearance and provide basic environmental protection.

Polishing

A mechanical finishing process that smooths and buffs the surface to achieve a reflective, glossy appearance. Reduces surface roughness and improves overall aesthetics.

Chromate

A conversion coating that creates a matte, clear protective layer. Enhances corrosion resistance while maintaining electrical conductivity—often used for aluminum and zinc parts.

What Is CNC Milling?

CNC milling is a machining process that uses a rotating cutting tool to remove material and shape a part. These automated machines come in various sizes and axis configurations, allowing for both simple and complex geometries. While commonly used for harder metals, CNC milling can also machine a wide range of materials, including plastics, aluminum, stainless steel, and titanium.

CNC Milling FAQs

What Types of CNC Milling Machines Are Available?

The equipment lineup includes vertical CNC milling machines, horizontal CNC milling machines, and advanced multi-axis CNC machines.

Vertical CNC mills offer excellent cost efficiency and versatility, making them suitable for a wide range of machining tasks. Horizontal CNC mills are ideal for creating grooves, slots, and other features commonly required in geared components. Multi-axis CNC machines operate on more than four axes, enabling the production of highly complex, precise parts with greater efficiency and accuracy.

CNC milling is ideal for producing parts with complex geometries, flat features, and irregular surfaces. It can efficiently create grooves, gears, threads, and precision-shaped surfaces often required in dies, molds, and other detailed components.

CNC milling machines support a wide selection of materials, including metals, plastics, and composites. Common metal options include aluminum, brass, steel, and titanium. Frequently used plastics include ABS, PVC, polypropylene, and polycarbonate. This versatility makes CNC milling suitable for everything from durable mechanical components to lightweight functional prototypes.
